What is Indian Head Massage?
Indian head massage is a relaxing holistic treatment that uses acupressure massage on the head, face, neck and shoulders. It aims to rebalance your body’s energies.
Indian head massage is an ancient complementary therapy, based on the ayurvedic system of healing that has been practiced in India for over a thousand years.
This particular gentle form of massage therapy is part of Indian family life.
Part of the Hindu health care practice of Ayurveda, Indian head massage focuses on your head, neck and shoulders and was originally used to improve scalp and hair condition.
It involves a deep massage, using a variety of pressure and techniques, including circular massage strokes on your scalp, deep tissue work on your shoulders, and stretching the neck.
Indian head massage, also known as champissage, is a traditional therapeutic technique that focuses on massaging the head, neck, face and shoulders.
Indian Head Massage Benefits
This form of massage focuses on the three higher “chakras” – mind, body and soul and as such hits your energy epicentre.
It doesn’t seem sufficient to say that a good Indian head massage will relax you. It’s much more than this.
It can make you feel detached and serene, leave you sighing and wordless, but also alert and clear-headed, alleviating brain-fog tension and stress
Even if you don’t experience this level of relaxation, this massage treatment offers all kinds of other benefits.
Tension and pain in your neck, back and shoulders are released whilst stimulating the hair follicles, it s said to improve the texture of your hair and encourage hair growth.
An Indian head massage stimulates blood flow, lymph and oxygen in your upper body, and therefore may help ease sinusitis and relieve stress and help you sleep better.
it is said to help cure headaches (even migraine), eye strain jaw ache and anxiety, some say an Indian head massage can help you to focus and concentrate better at work.
The treatment provides a deep sense of relaxation, improving mental wellbeing. As a result, it can also help to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
Improved Circulation
The body’s lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste products from the tissues and into the blood circulation.
Indian head massage can help this process by stimulating circulation, whilst promoting the natural drainage of the lymph. It also aids in bringing nutrients and oxygen to the cells.
Hair and Scalp Health
Kneading of the head during a massage, opens up the blood vessels on the scalp and helps in better absorption by the blood vessels .
Massage to the head and scalp increases oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicle which in turn stimulates hair growth.
The Technique: How Indian Head Massage Works
Some of the key marma points stimulated in Indian head massage are located: At the base of the skull: This point is said to relieve stress and anxiety.
On the temples: this point is said to improve sleep quality. Between the eyebrows: this point is said to relieve headaches and eye strain
- Acupressure Points
- Massage Strokes and Movements
- Effleurage (soothing and stroking movements)
- Petrissage (kneading and squeezing)
- Tapotement (hacking and tapping)
- Friction (rubbing and ‘shampooing’)
- Feathering (light finger pressure)
- Stretching (of the neck)
- Rotation (of the shoulder joint)
- Use of Oils (Optional)
In a spa setting, this massage may be coupled with oils, which condition the hair and promotes growth and healthy skin.
Coconut and almond oil are the most popular to use, these oils are perfect for dry hair. Mustard oil, sesame oil, olive oil, and jasmine oil can also be used with varying specific benefits for skin and hair health.
Conversely, in a mobile or corporate setting, the massage is usually done without oils to make it more accessible.
The massage will still have naturally conditioning effects however, as the techniques used will loosen the hair follicles which increases natural hair oil

Chakras and Energy Flow
Within Indian head massage, work is primarily carried out on the three higher chakras, the crown, the brow (third eye) and the throat.
Within my treatments I also work on the heart chakra known as the bridging chakra and use the crystals to help the client visualise the colours relating to each. Energy can be re-aligned and harmony restored
There are many different massage techniques used throughout the Indian Head massage including Pressure or Marma points.
There are 37 marma points that can be treated or manipulated during an Indian head massage.
Massaging these points is thought to cleanse blocked energy flow by using the finger tips to either stimulate or calm the marma point and promote physical, emotional and spiritual balance.
Contraindications and Precautions
Due to the level of stimulation, people with high or low blood pressure epilepsy or cancer are usually advised not to have a Indian Head Massage treatment.
Or if you have had recent surgery or a history of thrombosis
